Having the perfect SUP paddle can truly make all the difference in your performance on the water. With lots of options to choose from, how do you find which one suits you best?

In our guide for paddles in 2023 I’ll walk through selecting just the right SUP paddle, some top recommendations available this year plus power techniques & proper maintenance tips to optimise your paddling.

Choosing the Right SUP Paddle for Your Needs

When it comes to getting the most out of paddle boarding, selecting a perfect SUP paddle is key. The right one for you and your SUP style can significantly improve performance on the water whilst reducing fatigue levels at the same time.

There are numerous types available with varying lengths, materials such as aluminium, fibreglass or carbon-fibre blades so there’s something suitable for everyone. From beginners looking for an affordable and durable option up to experienced paddlers in search of lightweight but high-performance models within this huge range, ideal options exist!

Factors to Consider

When selecting the ideal SUP paddle, it is essential to contemplate on material, design and adjustable paddles’ advantages. Common materials are carbon fibre, aluminium and fibre glass. Each of which contributes in terms of weight, longevity and cost.

Adjustable stand up paddle board (SUP) paddles such as these provide an awesome choice for a variety of ages/sizes due to its movability allowing riders rapid length modifications while supplying powerful strokes while they’re out boarding. This flexibility makes them apt choices when picking what would be best suited for yourself or friends who share their gear making them great contenders worthy enough to consider when deciding upon your perfect SUP paddle!

Matching Paddle to SUP Style

For SUP activities, paddles come in various shapes and sizes to suit all types of styles. Glassfibre nylon/PU plastic, aluminum fiberglass and carbon are the material options available with adjustable one-piece fixed two-piece as well as three, piece variable length choices for users. When selecting a paddle that is right for your type of sport, such as family use or racing, consider ease of use durability along with its performance ability. Alloy paddles work great for beginners while more experienced paddlers interested in surfing, touring or competitive events benefit from using carbon ones due to their strength. Making them ideal when it comes to exceptional performance results on water!

Best Aluminium Paddle

Lightweight yet durable in nature, these paddles are cost-effective as well compared to other types such as carbon fiber ones. Although we cannot point out any particular top choice of aluminium paddles specifically for 2023, options like Aqua Bound Malta Fiberglass 2 Piece and Nixy Pro series have been highly recommended by many experts. When deciding on which type of aluminium style works best with your individual preferences regarding weight grip size or even design, it’s important that you weigh all these factors before investing in one.

The Aqua-Bound Malta with its translucent compression moulded design and Kialoa Uhane 91 featuring ergonomic styling plus a wide blade should be on your list for 2023 paddlers searching for value in weightlessness. Allowing you to enjoy time afloat while having full control over power transfer into the water, these two options present an exciting selection that won’t break your budget.

Paddle Boarding Techniques: Maximising Power and Efficiency

No matter the SUP paddle you’re using, lightweight carbon or a budget-friendly aluminium option, mastering techniques to maximise your power and efficiency while out on the water will enhance your overall paddle boarding experience. We’ll discuss how effective hand placement during grip and stroke technique can help not only improve performance but also reduce fatigue so that you get more enjoyment from this activity.

To make sure there are positive results with every outing, we recommend tips about where to place hands along with switching sides of paddling as well as rotating it for improved thrust. All these add up when trying to cover longer distances quickly. Thus allowing an optimised way for extra control over one’s manoeuvring skills while engaged in paddle boarding activities!

It’s worth noting that whether recreational or competitively driven goals are being pursued, understanding proper positioning is key when striving towards increased success upon navigating across waterscapes like never before experienced within various aspects of learning curves associated with journeys involving standup boards powered by supple oars held firmly yet comfortably within grasp!

Paddle Grip and Hand Positioning

Having a firm yet gentle grasp on the paddle board is essential for proficient and effective performance. Secure one hand firmly onto the T-grip, with the other set upon the shaft at approximately 90 degrees from your elbow. Grip both sides of the top handle as well as down along the shaft to deliver maximum power when paddling. This also prevents tension in the arms or shoulders, which can lead to tiredness quickly if overlooked. A light hold enables enhanced control while being flexible throughout activity, lessening fatigue and strain simultaneously while experiencing optimum output during time spent paddle boarding.

Stroke Technique

For optimal performance while paddle boarding, it is essential to efficiently utilise stroke techniques. To maximise power and decrease fatigue, the blade needs to be fully submerged in the water when performing a strong forward paddling stroke using your whole body. Good posture and engaging of one’s core are also necessary for endurance as well as efficiency.

Switching Sides and Paddle Rotation

When paddle boarding, it is essential to switch sides and rotate the paddle in order to maintain balance and a straight line. To do this you will need to move your torso towards the opposite side of where you are paddling while keeping your core stable so that both feet remain firmly on the board, remember how important it is for manoeuvrability. Every few strokes should involve switching sides as well as making sure verticality when using its blade. Mastering these techniques provides better control over speed and direction out at sea, regardless of what type of gear you choose. This skill can then provide an improved experience all around within water sports activities!

Caring for Your SUP Paddle

It is essential for any SUP paddle to be looked after properly so that it can maintain its performance and usability when you are out on the water. Here, we will investigate ways of caring for your equipment: cleaning/storage processes, damage inspections and accessories which could help in preserving its condition over time. Following these instructions carefully should allow you to keep using your SUP paddle at a high level while giving optimum enjoyment through years of successful use.

Cleaning and Storage

When using a SUP paddle, be sure to rinse it off with fresh water after each use and clean it occasionally with mild soap. Avoid scrubbing too hard or pressurising the blade. Proper care will protect your gear from sand, saltwater damage and other debris. For storage purposes, keep it in an area that is shaded away from sunlight – utilising covers such as Red Paddle Co’s Paddle Bag & Blade Cover can give extra cushioning when not being used.

Inspecting for Damage

Degeneration of the paddle and ensure it is always in peak condition. Paddle Accessories

If you are a paddle boarder, then investing in the right accessories for your set up can be beneficial. For added convenience and protection, there are leashes, bags to hold your paddles, as well as gripping options available. Electric pumps, dry bags and wetsuits may also come in handy when out on the water while kayak seats or anchors could help secure everything. If needed. Other useful items include shoes/sandals, spare fins and coolers that all have their part to play too!

Not only will these extras offer great comfort, but they’ll ensure that your equipment remains safe, which ultimately means more enjoyment from its use over time – making it worth every penny of investment!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do paddle board paddles make a difference?

Having the correct paddle board paddles is essential for making a difference in your performance. The right combination of materials and shape should be tailored to fit your skill level as well as style. Doing so will maximize power, speed, and overall proficiency while using it.

It’s important to dedicate time to finding an appropriate paddle that accommodates how you use your board. Think about what type of water sports activities do you enjoy doing? Considering these facts can greatly improve both pleasure and progress when out on the water!

Is 2 or 3 fins better on a paddle board?

For paddle boarding, the best fin setup will depend on your skill level. A 2+1 or 3 fin combination is ideal for experienced riders to better navigate choppy waters, whereas beginners may find a single-fin board more manageable with less drag and easier manoeuvring.

No matter what kind of experience you have in this sport though, it’s always worth finding which configuration works best for you specifically when paddleboarding.

What should you not do when paddle boarding?

For a safe and enjoyable paddle boarding experience, always store the board in a cool dry place using an appropriate bag for transport. Be aware of water depth when paddling and make sure to bring your fins with you! Keeping these simple rules in mind will prevent damage or misplacement of the board due to sun exposure, incorrect storing/transporting methods as well as forgetfulness. With this knowledge under consideration during each trip out on the waters, fun is assured without compromising safety.

Why are SUP paddles so expensive?

SUP paddles are pricey due to the construction of them using premium materials, assembly by professional technicians and having accompanying extras like a leash or carry bag. Hand-crafted boards similarly tend to be more expensive as they require laborious production processes. Despite this extra expense though, SUP paddles provide dependable performance and longevity so it is worth investing in them for their durability.

What factors should I consider when choosing a SUP paddle?

When deciding which SUP paddle to purchase, think about the size of both you and the blade, as well as its length, material make-up and how it would suit your paddling technique. All these factors need to be taken into account in order for you to find a suitable solution that is just right for what you require from a SUP paddle.

GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid Review

First Impressions, a well made Buoyancy Aid

As soon as I took the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid out of its packaging, I could tell it was a well-made piece of kit. The construction is solid, and the stitching looks neat and tidy. It’s made from a durable, lightweight material that feels like it will stand up to plenty of use. The design is simple but effective, with a sleek look that I really like.

Broad velcro waist straps

The GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid has broad velcro securing straps that run around the waist and secure at the front.

These straps are fully adjustable, so you can get a snug and comfortable fit. They’re also quick and easy to adjust, so you can tighten or loosen them as needed.

The velcro is strong and secure, so you don’t have to worry about the straps coming undone while you’re out on the water.

Good sized pocket at the front, secured with velcro, with a drain hole

One of the things I really like about the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid is the good-sized pocket at the front.

It’s secured with velcro, so you can easily open and close it, even with wet or cold hands. The pocket has a drain hole, just incase you end up going for a swim.

It’s perfect for storing small essentials like a phone, keys, or a snack.

Side zip to make it easier to get on and off

Putting on a buoyancy aid can be a bit of a struggle, especially if it’s a tight fit. That’s why I really appreciate the side zip on the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid.

The zip makes it much easier to get the buoyancy aid on and off, without having to wriggle and squirm.

It’s a small feature, but it makes a big difference in terms of convenience and ease of use.

The front and back foam inserts can be removed, I assume for easy drying

One feature of the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid that I appreciate is that the foam inserts at the front and back can be removed.

This is a great feature for easy drying, especially if you’ve been out on the water all day and your buoyancy aid has gotten wet.

You can easily take out the foam inserts and hang up the buoyancy aid to dry. Once it’s dry, you can simply re-insert the foam inserts and you’re ready to go.

There are a couple of disadvantages:

The sizing is small: One thing to note about the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid is that the sizing runs small. I normally wear a Medium in other Buoyancy Aids, but I had to order a Large in this one. If you’re thinking about buying this buoyancy aid, make sure to check the size chart carefully and consider ordering a size up.

The waist elastic is very tight: Another issue I’ve had with the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid is that the waist elastic is very tight.

In fact, it’s so tight that I’m considering cutting it. It can get uncomfortable on longer paddles, and I don’t think there’s a need for it since the velcro waist straps feel really secure.

There is no shoulder strap adjustment: Finally, one thing that’s missing from the GUL Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid is shoulder strap adjustment.

While the velcro waist straps are fully adjustable, the shoulder straps are not.

This means that the buoyancy aid may not fit perfectly for everyone, especially if you have broad shoulders or a larger chest.

Best SUP Yoga Boards: How to Choose the Perfect Paddleboard for Yoga

If you’re a yoga enthusiast looking to take your practice to the water, then you need to invest in a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) that is specifically designed for yoga. These boards are wider, longer, and thicker than regular SUPs, providing greater stability and buoyancy. But with so many options available in the market, selecting the best SUP yoga board can be a daunting task.

When choosing a SUP yoga board, there are several factors to consider. Firstly, the board should be stable and wide enough to allow you to move around freely and perform various yoga poses. Secondly, it should be durable and made from high-quality materials that can withstand the rigours of regular use in water. Thirdly, it should be lightweight and easy to transport, especially if you plan to take it to different locations for your yoga practice.

Why Choose a SUP Yoga Board?

If you’re looking for a new way to practice yoga, or just want to try something different, SUP yoga might be just what you need. SUP yoga, or stand-up paddleboard yoga, is a fun and challenging way to take your practice to the water. But why choose a SUP yoga board over a traditional yoga mat?

Benefits of SUP Yoga

One of the main benefits of SUP yoga is the added challenge of practicing on an unstable surface. Balancing on a paddleboard requires more core engagement and focus, making your yoga practice even more beneficial for your body and mind. Plus, being out on the water can be a calming and rejuvenating experience, adding an extra level of relaxation to your practice.

Another benefit of SUP yoga is the opportunity to connect with nature. Being out on the water allows you to experience the beauty of your surroundings in a unique way. You may even spot some wildlife while you’re practicing!

What to Consider When Selecting a SUP Yoga Board

When selecting a SUP yoga board, there are a few things to consider. The most important factor is stability. You want a board that is wide and stable enough to support your yoga practice without wobbling or tipping over. Look for a board with a width of at least 30 inches and a volume of at least 200 litres.

Another factor to consider is the board’s weight and portability. You’ll need to be able to carry the board from your car to the water, so make sure it’s light enough for you to handle. Inflatable boards are a good option for SUP yoga, as they’re easy to transport and store when not in use.

Finally, consider the board’s features. Look for a board with a non-slip deck pad to help prevent slips and falls, and consider an anchor system to keep your board in place during your practice.

Types of SUP Yoga Boards

Inflatable SUP Yoga Boards

Inflatable SUP yoga boards are a popular choice for yoga enthusiasts. They are lightweight, easy to transport, and can be inflated and deflated quickly. They are also more affordable than hard SUP yoga boards. Inflatable SUP yoga boards are made of durable materials and are designed to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes, so you can choose the one that is best suited for your practice.

Hard SUP Yoga Boards

Hard SUP yoga boards are a more traditional option. They are made of solid materials, such as fibreglass or epoxy, and are more durable than inflatable SUP yoga boards. Hard SUP yoga boards are heavier and more difficult to transport, but they offer a more stable platform for yoga practice. They are also more expensive than inflatable SUP yoga boards. Hard SUP yoga boards come in a variety of sizes and shapes, so you can choose the one that is best suited for your practice.

When choosing a SUP yoga board, consider your level of experience, your body type, and the type of yoga you will be practicing. Inflatable SUP yoga boards are a great option for beginners or those who want a more affordable option. Hard SUP yoga boards are a good choice for experienced yogis who want a more stable platform for their practice. No matter which type of SUP yoga board you choose, make sure it is the right size for your body and practice. A board that is too small will be unstable, while a board that is too large will be difficult to manoeuvre. Choose a board that is the right length, width, and thickness for your body type and the type of yoga you will be practicing.

Features to Look for in a SUP Yoga Board

Stability and Balance

When it comes to selecting a SUP yoga board, stability and balance are key factors to consider. You want a board that can provide a stable platform for your yoga practice, even when you are performing challenging poses. Look for a board with a wide and flat deck that offers good stability and balance. Boards with a planing hull are also a great option as they provide better stability on flat water.

Length and Width

The length and width of your SUP yoga board are also essential factors to consider. A longer board will provide more stability and glide, while a wider board will offer better balance and support. A board that is at least 10 feet long and 32 inches wide is a good option for most yogis. However, taller and heavier individuals may need a longer and wider board for added stability.

Thickness and Volume

The thickness and volume of your SUP yoga board play a crucial role in determining its stability and buoyancy. A thicker board will provide better stability and support, while a board with more volume will float higher in the water. Look for a board that is at least 5 inches thick and has a volume of at least 200 litres for added stability and buoyancy.

Deck Pad and Traction

The deck pad and traction of your SUP yoga board are also important features to consider. You want a board with a comfortable and non-slip deck pad that provides good grip and support during your yoga practice. Look for a board with a high-quality EVA foam deck pad that is thick and durable.

Weight Capacity

The weight capacity of your SUP yoga board is another important factor to consider. You want a board that can support your weight and the weight of any additional gear you may bring along. Look for a board with a weight capacity of at least 250 pounds for added stability and support.

Fins

The fins of your SUP yoga board are also essential features to consider. Fins provide stability and control in the water, and they can affect the board’s manoeuvrability and speed. Look for a board with a single fin or a tri-fin setup for added stability and control.

Portability

Finally, the portability of your SUP yoga board is an important factor to consider if you plan to travel with it or store it in a small space. Look for a board that is lightweight and easy to carry, with built-in handles for added convenience. Inflatable boards are also a great option as they can be deflated and packed away in a small bag for easy storage and transport.

SUP Shoes: Features to Consider

Selecting the perfect pair of SUP shoes involves more than just picking a style that suits your taste. It’s essential to consider factors like:

  • Durability
  • Support
  • Traction
  • Insulation

If you’ve stepped in a puddle while out walking you’ll know how uncomfortable it is to have cold water sloshing around your feet, that’s why drainage holes are important in shoes.

Neoprene is a great material for SUP shoes because it will insulate your feet and protect you from the cold.

Wetsuit boots and shoes don’t have drainage holes as they work by trapping water next to your skin so it warms up.

Best Paddle Boarding Shoes

It’s a good idea to think about the type of closure system your Paddle Boarding Shoes have. Laces, Velcro straps, and elastic are all popular options for securing your shoes to your feet, but I think it’s more about personal preference.

If you’re buying wetsuit boots, I would recommend getting some with a zip to avoid struggling getting them on and off!

How to Properly Care for Your SUP Shoes

Here are some tips about SUP shoe care:

  1. After each use, rinse your SUP shoes with fresh water to remove any salt, sand, or debris. Salty shoes (and clothing) will take a lot longer to dry.
  2. Make sure shoes are dried thoroughly, remove laces and insoles and pull out the tongues. It can also help to stuff them with news paper.
  3. If your shoes take a while to dry, they might start to smell. Vinegar and bicarb of soda can help to reduce the odour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What shoes to wear stand up paddle boarding?

For the cold months, a Neoprene shoe or bootie is recommended for stand up paddle boarding. In the summer months, going barefoot may be more suitable; however, if you are launching your board in an area with rocks or sharp debris, shoes are a good idea.

Do you need water shoes to paddleboard?

For added convenience and safety, it is recommended to wear water shoes or sandals while paddleboarding. You can wear them while you launch and then take them off when you’re on the water and tuck them under the board’s bungees.

What materials are recommended for the uppers of SUP shoes?

Mesh, canvas, or neoprene are all recommended materials for the uppers of SUP shoes, providing good breathability, flexibility, and durability.

These materials are ideal for SUP shoes because they are lightweight, comfortable, and provide good grip on the board. They also offer protection from the elements and are easy to clean and maintain.

How important is insulation in cold weather paddle boarding shoes?

Insulation is essential for cold weather paddle boarding, providing warmth and protection for your feet during your sessions. Neoprene boots are your best bet, the water gets trapped between the neoprene and your foot so that it warms up and protects your feet.

Are slip-on SUP shoes suitable for all paddleboarding conditions?

Slip-on SUP shoes provide a comfortable and convenient option, however they may not provide the same level of traction and support as other options, making them less suitable for rougher paddling conditions.

Difference between a Buoyancy Aid and an Inflatable Buoyancy Belt

There are three main types of personal flotation devices (PFDs): life jackets, foam buoyancy aids, and flotation air belts.

Life Jackets provide the most buoyancy and can keep an unconscious wearer’s head above water, making them suitable for various water activities.

Buoyancy Aids, or buoyancy vests, allow for greater freedom of movement and are ideal for sports like kayaking and canoeing.

Flotation Air Belts are waist-worn PFDs that offer minimal bulk and maximum freedom of movement, perfect for stand-up paddle boarding and snorkeling.

I recommend that children do not use Air Belts.

When selecting a PFD, consider your swimming ability, activity type, and need for mobility to ensure the best fit for your water-based adventures. Have a look at this post for more details on Understanding the Differences between Life Jackets, Foam Buoyancy Aids, and Flotation Air Belts.

FAQs – Personal Floatation Devices for Paddle Boarding

What type of PFD is best for paddle boarding?

When choosing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for paddle boarding, it is important to consider the type of water you will be paddling in. For general recreational use, an Inflatable PFD is recommended as they are lightweight and comfortable while providing ample buoyancy. If you plan on paddling in rougher waters or colder temperatures, a foam-filled PFD may be more suitable due to its increased flotation capabilities and greater protection from hypothermia. Additionally, make sure that your PFD fits properly and meets all safety regulations set by the US Coast Guard.

How much weight can a 10 6 paddle board hold?

The amount of weight a 10’6 paddle board can hold depends on the type and construction of the board. Generally, an inflatable paddle board with a maximum capacity of 300 lbs is suitable for one adult rider plus gear. A hard-shell or epoxy SUP can typically handle more weight, up to 350 lbs or more depending on its size and design. It’s important to always check your manufacturer’s guidelines before loading up your board to ensure you don’t exceed its recommended limits.

Do you need a PFD on a paddleboard?

Yes, it is recommended to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) when paddle boarding. PFDs provide extra buoyancy and can help keep you afloat in the event of an accident or if you become fatigued while out on the water. Additionally, wearing a PFD may be required by law depending on where you are paddling. It’s important to check local regulations before heading out for your paddle board adventure. To ensure safety and peace of mind, always wear a properly fitted PFD when paddle boarding.

What size paddle board is good for a 6 foot man?

For a 6 foot man, the ideal paddle board size is typically between 10’6″ and 11’6″. A longer board will provide more stability in the water, while a shorter one will be easier to maneuver. The width of the board should also be taken into consideration; wider boards are better for beginners as they offer more stability. Ultimately, it’s important to find a balance between length and width that works best for your individual needs. Try out different sizes before making your purchase so you can make an informed decision about which size paddle board is right for you.
